How to Reduce Plastic Waste at the Grocery Store
Plastic is everywhere in the grocery store. Produce wrapped in film. Yogurt cups. Snack bags. Plastic clamshells. Bottles, tubs, trays, and packages inside other packages.
And all of these goods are delivered on pallets wrapped top to bottom in single-use plastic sheets.
While it can feel like avoiding plastic requires completely changing the way you shop, it really doesn’t have to.
Reducing plastic waste at the grocery store is less about being perfect and more about making a few better choices whenever you can.
Start here
Start With the Packaging
One of the simplest ways to reduce plastic waste is to pay attention to what your groceries come in.
When you have a choice between the same type of product in plastic or in glass, paper, aluminum, or a reusable container, choose the option with less single-use plastic.
This doesn’t mean you need to stand in every aisle analyzing every package. Start with the products you buy most often.
Milk. Eggs. Pasta. Pantry staples. Cleaning supplies. Snacks.
Changing the packaging of something you buy every week can make a much bigger difference over time than stressing over an occasional purchase.
Skip some packaging
Buy in Bulk When You Can
Bulk shopping can eliminate a surprising amount of packaging, especially for pantry staples like:
- Rice
- Beans
- Pasta
- Oats
- Nuts & seeds
- Spices
- Baking ingredients
- Snacks
If your grocery store allows reusable containers, even better.
Use it again
Choose Reusable Over Single-Use
Reusable shopping bags are a great start, but they’re only one part of the equation.
Reusable produce bags, jars, bottles, and food containers can replace hundreds of disposable packages over their lifetime.
The easiest reusable system is the one you’ll actually use, so don’t feel like you need to buy an entire zero-waste starter kit. Use what you already own whenever possible.
The Nude Foods approach
Bulk shopping, without the extra homework.
At Nude Foods Market, we take the bulk-shopping concept one step further.
We purchase in bulk, then pre-portion our groceries into returnable containers, so you get the convenience of grabbing what you need without bringing home another disposable package.
Use it. Return it. We clean it. Then it goes back into circulation.
Keep it simple
The best reusable system is the one you’ll actually use.
You don’t need an entire collection of matching jars, bags, or zero-waste accessories. Start with what you already have and replace disposable items when it makes sense.
04 · Shop the season
Shop Local and Seasonal Produce
Fresh fruits and vegetables are often some of the easiest groceries to buy without plastic packaging.
Choosing loose produce instead of pre-packaged options can immediately reduce the amount of plastic coming home with you.
Shopping local and seasonal also has another benefit: food often travels a shorter distance to reach you.
At Nude Foods, we prioritize local and organic groceries whenever possible, making it easier to fill your kitchen with food you feel good about.
the pantry.
05 · Household essentials
Plastic waste at the grocery store isn’t limited to food.
Dish soap, laundry products, cleaning sprays, shampoo, and other household essentials can generate a significant amount of plastic waste too.
Refillable and reusable alternatives can help you reduce waste throughout your home—not just in your pantry.
Better beats perfect
Don’t let perfect get in the way of better.
You do not need a perfectly plastic-free kitchen to make an impact.
Maybe you start buying one pantry staple without disposable packaging. Maybe you switch your produce routine. Maybe you choose refillable dish soap.
Those choices add up.
And the easier sustainable shopping becomes, the more likely we are to keep doing it.
That’s exactly why Nude Foods exists.
We’re building a grocery experience where reducing waste doesn’t require extra work, complicated systems, or a pantry full of mason jars with mismatched—or missing—lids.
Just good food, less waste, and a better way to grocery shop.
